Lovely writing Kitty! My father heard voices in the walls and drank a lot and my mother was an anxiety-ridden alcoholic. I have a garden variety anxiety disorder like my mom. I have mentally ill friends and it is always worrisome when one of them goes off meds. It can be really scary.

Used to be fire was an viewed as an act of God, such that in colonial America they'd let the house struck by lightening burn and only save the surrounding houses. We still view mental illness the same way. Some people don't even believe it is real. The brain is certainly part of the body and can be affected the same as the arm or leg.

thanks for this thoughtful piece!

And thanks for your thoughtful response! When you start to think about how many people are affected by these illnesses - not just the mentally ill but all of the people whose lives are changed by them - it really is a significant social crisis.
when the movie comes out in wider/full release, please blog about it. i want to see it.
A woman I was married to once developed a psychosis that lasted for several weeks. These folks are caught in a nightmare that doesn't end when they wake up. I can't imagine anything more terrifying.
Was it after giving birth? Some women experience post-partum psychosis.
I will - I am actually in touch with the filmmaker about helping her use online social networking to reach a wider audience, so you will be hearing about it!
No - thyroid trouble (Grave's disease) poorly diagnosed/treated by Kaiser, on top of pre-existing trouble.
I have thyroid disease too - Hashimotos. It is a bear at times.
