travel suggestions?

Comments

I've been to Copenhagen and southern Sweden but I couldn't tell you what to do or where to dine or drink, it was so long ago. Besides, I take the vagabond approach, in that wherever my radar directs me is where I end up!
london:
-noodles at the wagamama on streatham street (very close to the british museum)
-the camden arts centre
-the gate (a-mazing vegetarian food in hammersmith)
-tate modern, bien sur
-shopping at muji
I mostly do the same. I think of travel more like exploration than tourism, but still... sometimes people have those favorite things that might be worth checking out.
Yay! Thanks Matokie!

There is much more in London than to noodles. Just a simple chat with the taxi guy will let you know more about this great travel destination.

Dave and I did Amsterdam, but I couldn't tell you anyplace great to go because we didn't get must touristy stuff in due to my having some Czec plague. He might have some suggestions on Berlin. I'll ask.

Have fun!!

"They" keep talking about the "Prague Ham" and the piece freshly roasted over a barrel of fire we ate was amazingly good. Would suggest starting at the Prague Castle and surrounding area as a launching point for good scenery. Lots of small eating places on the streets at the bottom of the hill under the castle. The goulash soup was also great.

If you like beer at all, I would highly suggest finding a place with "Budweiser" on tap. It is the original Czech pilsner and has nothing to do with that stuff they sell in the US. Carlsberg makes a great second.

Berlin has more miles of canals than Venice and every great architectural site stands next to the water. Take the boat tour around the city (Boot Rundfahrt) for the best views. The glass dome on top of the Reichstag was designed by British architect Norman Foster and features hundreds of movable mirrors which are programmed to direct natural sunlight into the parliament chambers. After waiting in a long line it is possible to climb the steps into the dome. Also within walking distance of the Reichstag is the Brandenburg Gate and the Jewish Memorial. The Jewish Memorial is a huge piece of outdoor experiential sculpture which looks rather tame and even somewhat inviting from a distance, but then produces . . . . . . (description deleted so as not to spoil).
oops, not Carlsberg. it's Pilsner Urquell that is Czech.

hey Kitty.

My sister lives in Prague and we went over to visit in 2000. I liked the city. All the tourist sites are fun and inescapable in the city, since tourism is a big industry. My sister took us to a cheap Seventh Day Adventist restaurant in the city, which had really good food.

Outside the city, The Bone Church, is worth a drive. The church is entirely constructed of human bones. really beautiful. Another memorable part for me was driving into Moravia, the Jessiniky mountains. I loved all the little wooden shrines. The beer everywhere is a meal in itself. Cesky Krumlov was also a great place, which is outside Prague in the Czech Republic. All the hills there are a great walk.

I'm so jealous.

"Out of the country" for me has meant Canada and a couple of trips to The Caymans.

Drink?... uhm, beer? But you knew I'd say that... happy trails.

Thanks Dave - I'll save the Carlsberg for Germany :-) I've been a fan of the Urquell for years and look forward to trying the local stuff!
@Lucy - ooh, great suggestions. The bone church is going on the list for sure.
oh sure. wish i could help. ;)

kitty -- crazy, we just went to Germany in February and we spent a bunch of time in Berlin. I loved it as a city. World-class museums, great restaurants, and still a sense of rebirth even a decade after re-unification. It depends on what you're into --- fine arts -- Museum Isle is great; history -- the area around Potsdamer Platz, the Wall, the Holocause Museum and the Reichstag; modern arts and club scene -- the whole area (I'm blanking on the name) NE of Alexanderplatz. Its a great city to walk around in and absorb all those different facets.

For me, the Globe Theater tour was the best part of London. That and hand-feeding a squirrel. Oh, and there was the horseguard whose horse nearly chewed my thumb off because he thought it was a carrot apparently. Much ado!
Hi, I think you must be back by now... So how was your trip to London. Hopw you enjoyed your holiday!
