health insurance is for healthy people
Today I filled out a 35 page health questionnaire from Washington State to determine my eligibility for individual health insurance plans. Out of 35 pages I checked three "yes" boxes for the conditions that I am currently being treated for: Hypothyroidism, Depression, and a strained back. Each ailment earns a certain number of points, and if your points are too many, no insurance company will have you - even if you are willing to pay the high premium. Luckily for me, my "disorders" are relatively common and treatable, so my insurance agent lady assured me that it would be no problem.
I had to call her (the friendly insurance lady) to go over my points before mailing my application. When I said, "Depression," she said, "Oh, you poor thing!" Seriously. I told her not to worry, I'm medicated now. Then she asked if I had Depression with or without psychosis. Actually, how she put it was: "Are you psychotic?" (Psychosis adds points). I found this funny because the psychotic people I have known would not answer yes to that question. Anyway, I'm not psychotic, so my "mental illness" is no problem, points-wise.
Isn't it lovely how insurance people refuse to cover those who are really sick? Wasn't that supposed to be the point of medical insurance in the first place? They just want to be paid for nothing by healthy people. Nice work if you can get it, I guess.
